Experience the beauty of Riverside Gardens
(return to top of page)

Gracing the north entrance to Monticello along Main Street (old Highway 151) is Riverside Gardens, a city park, built and maintained by volunteers.
The gardens are a showcase for the diversity of flowers available for today’s gardens.
Riverside Gardens, tucked between residential areas and the scenic Maquoketa River, includes more than 30 flower beds, a picnic area, a gazebo, a wishing well, nature trails and a wetlands area.
An interpretive nature trail encircles the wetlands area with signs indicating the importance of wetlands to water quality and identifying plants and animals in the ecosystem.
Riverside Gardens have been growing every year. This growing happened gradually ? Victorian street lights were added in 1991, for instance.
Check out all the progress during the Garden Walk, held the second Sunday in July.
The garden area is funded through the sale of picture post cards of the gardens, memberships, donations, memorials, an annual plant sale and bake sale on the day before Mother’s Day.

For more information, contact Riverside Gardens, Inc., P.O. Box 103, Monticello, Iowa 52310, or contact the Monticello Area Chamber of Commerce at 465-5626.

Bring your bike to Jones County
(return to top of page)

Whether you enjoy the exhilaration of flying down a steep hill with the wind in your hair or an easy pedal on flat terrain, Jones County has the bike paths to fill your needs.
Although not filled with “established” bike routes, Jones County offers bicycling enthusiasts a variety of enjoyable riding experiences.
The county boasts a Scenic Byway, established by the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) along Highway 64.
In addition, the DOT rated several, less-traveled, county roads high in their scenic quality.
Riding along county roads X-28, E-28 and E-17 around Anamosa, Stone City and the bluffs along the Maquoketa River provide pleasurable biking experiences.
Just south of Monticello on County Road E-16, or the Lower Prairieburg Road, is a trail marked for bicycling from Monticello to the west.
Highways are busy and dangerous for bikers, but it is rather common to find them on Iowa 64 - a marked Scenic Byway - or Iowa 38 during light traffic times. These make for pleasant riding.
This year will mark the fourth annual Red, White and Boom 4th of July weekend bicycle ride in Monticello. Sunday, June 29, there will be a 45-mile scenic ride and a 29-mile medium ride and a 19-mile short route for bicycle enthusiasts, starting and ending in Monticello. Check-in is from 8-10 a.m. at the Monticello Middle School parking lot.
Camp Courageous of Iowa sponsors a 5K Run, which features biking and running, on Sunday, Aug. 13. Proceeds and challenges go to the year-round recreational facility for the physically and mentally challenged. For information about the 5K Run, call Camp Courageous of Iowa at 465-5916.

Grant Wood is Jones County's famous native son
(return to top of page)

Residents of Jones County are particularly proud of their most famous native - Grant Wood.
The artist, who gained fame with his painting American Gothic, was an Anamosa native and set up an artist’s colony in Stone City.
Each year on the second Sunday in June the little town of Stone City takes a trip back in time to the days of Grant Wood.
The Grant Wood Art Festival, started in 1972, is an observance of the heritage and history of an American artistic legend. The event is a celebration of art and the legacy of early Irish immigrants who settled in Stone City.
Wood’s art colony, conducted in Stone City from 1932-1933, is brought back to life as the festival features juried artists and their ware. On-site demonstrations of artists’ crafts are scattered about the grounds and a supervised art program is available for children.
More than 50 artists have signed up for the 2004 show, which will be held Sunday, June 13. Included are basketry, calligraphy, fiber, fretwork (wood), jewelry, painting, photography, pottery, stained glass, wood, brooms, pen and ink, mixed sculpture and stone. In addition, several of Grant Wood’s works will be on display.
On stage will be various music acts, some performing two to three sets during the day. The stage at the Old Stone Barn will reverberate with sounds of folk, blues, blue grass and original music.
Very popular are the guided bus tours giving travelers a taste of the history of Stone City. The guided tours feature many of the historic buildings in Stone City, including the Stone Barn, St. Joseph’s Church, the Blacksmith Shop, and Stone City School. The tour includes a stop at the mine area located in a part of the original stone quarry that is still in operation.
Strolling entertainment can be seen at bus stops and throughout the village most of the day.
Area art students design the badges used for admittance to the festival. Each year a competition is held in the area schools — the winner getting the honor of having his or her picture displayed on the badge. This year’s badge design winner is Michelle Pinkston, a senior at Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids. Her design was based on the stained glass window “Veterans of all Wars” at the entrance to Cedar Rapids Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The window was designed by the late Grant     Wood and constructed in Germany in the 1920s.
More information about the Grant Wood Art Festival can be found at the Grant Wood Gallery Association located at 124 East Main Street in Anamosa. The center is open Mon. - Sat. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. The Grant Wood Gallery Association is staffed by local volunteers and can be reached by phoning 319-462-4267.

Find 'The Great Pumpkin' at Pumpkinfest
(return to top of page)

Pumpkin growers flock to Anamosa during the first weekend in October to celebrate Pumpkinfest. Anamosa was officially named Pumpkin Capital of Iowa by the Iowa legislature in 1993.

The activities on Oct. 2 and 3 are built around the Ryan Norlin Memorial Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off, which is held the Saturday of the festival.

Entries from approximately a half dozen states have joined Iowa giant pumpkin growers at the Lawrence Community Center in Anamosa to compete against 13 other North American sites for money and prestige. Some of the pumpkins displayed  tip the scales at more than 1,000 pounds, and more than 2,000 people make their way to Anamosa annually to see these giants.

It all began back in 1989 when Tom Norlin’s (weigh-off organizer) nephew Ryan began raising pumpkins. As a tribute to Ryan, who had lost his life in a boating accident that summer, Tom started the weigh-off, which has seen more than 60 entries.

Anamosa is one of 19 sites in the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth and belongs to the Midwest Pumpkin Growers Association.

The goal of every giant pumpkin grower is to produce a 1,000-pound pumpkin. In 1994, Glen Brown of Bethel, MN, broke the United States record with his 923-pound pumpkin. In 2002, a newcomer to the competition, Jerold Johnson of Clearbrook, MN, took home first place honors with a 1,083.5-pound entry. That pumpkin broke the record for the largest ever entered at the Anamosa site.

Other categories in the competition include cantaloupe, tomatoes, gourds and watermelon.

Other activities during Pumpkinfest include a pumpkin parade, scarecrow contest and exhibit, pumpkin toss, classic car show, children’s games and big wheel race, community food stands, Pumpkinfest store on Main Street, street dance, horseshoe pitching tournament, chili cook-off, pumpkin carving display, pumpkin recipe contest, garden tractor pull, pancake breakfast, CROP Walk, and Run, Punt, and Pass competition.

Appleby’s offers more than 100 canoes and a variety of trips, including the winding, nine-mile stretch of river from Mon-Maq Dam at Monticello to Pictured Rocks Park, which is known far and wide.

Canoers come from Dubuque, the Quad Cities, Des Moines and everywhere in between.
“There are a lot of beaches along the way,” Appleby said, “and people usually stop and eat lunch.”

Jones County busy building a bike/walking trail
(return to top of page)

Walking and biking trails have become increasingly popular in recent years, and now Jones County has a trail project of its very own.
The Grant Wood Trail is still under construction, but two stretches are open for the public to enjoy.
Currently, there is a section of trail open from the city of Olin, heading west for several miles.
The Grant Wood Trail Association bought the old  Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad right-of-way in 1999. The line runs through the Jones County towns of Oxford Junction, Hale, Olin, Morley and Martelle.
The trail association is still buying private land, and at the same time developing the trail on the right-of-way they do have.
In addition, the Linn County Trails Association is currently working on building the Grant Wood Trail from Cedar Rapids to the Jones County line, and already has 3.25 miles open. The design is for the two trails to meet at the county line, forming a continuous trail from Cedar Rapids to - some day - the Mississippi River.
People are encouraged to use the trail for their walking and biking pleasure. However, people are asked to respect the property rights of the people near the trail, to keep dogs on a leash, and to not litter around the area.
If you would like more information on the Grant Wood Trail, you can contact Joy Adams at 319-465-3898.

Sights to see in Jones County
(return to top of page)

History is rich in Jones County, no matter where your travels will take you throughout the area. Just a few of the myriad places to visit include:

ANAMOSA
Grant Wood Memorial Park - The park is owned by the Jones County Historic Preservation Commission, and home of the Paint ‘n Palette Club and art gallery, a non-profit organization formed in Stone City in 1955.
The park is located on Highway 64, four miles east of Anamosa.
In 1959, a group of amateur artists moved to Antioch school where American artist Grant Wood attended school. They restored the one-room schoolhouse and built a log cabin art gallery and studio on the grounds.
Beginning Memorial Day, the school and art gallery are open to visitors from 1 until 4 p.m. on Sundays. An outdoor art exhibit is held every year on the last Sunday in July.

The Lawrence Historical Home Museum - Located at 300 Booth Street, it is operated by the Anamosa Historical Society. The home was bequeathed to the society through the will of Roy Lawrence.
The museum is dedicated to the historical preservation of Anamosa’s way of life, both past and present. There are photos, items of furniture, clothing and other memorabilia made possible through donations.
Roy Lawrence was the surviving twin of Ray Lawrence. They were longtime stamp and coin dealers and even published a coin collector’s newspaper that had both national and overseas subscribers.

MARTELLE
The Old Military Road - It was the first permanent trail forged in the early 1800s. Located in the southwest corner of the county on Highway 1 near Martelle, the road was started in Dubuque and went to Iowa City, then the state of Iowa's capital. Cutting through Jones County, Lyman Dillon was hired in 1837 with his team of oxen to dig a furrow so travelers would have visible means to keep their bearings. It was signed into law on March 3, 1839, by President Martin Van Buren.  The road became known as Military Road and was the first in the state to be improved with stretches of corduroy road through boggy areas. Most of the trail is now on private property, but a section can be seen from Highway 151, just below an area known as the Rock Cut.
MONTICELLO
Bowen's Prairie Cemetery - Located just north of Monticello on Highway 151. The cemetery is the oldest pioneer cemetery in the area and it is all that remains of the area's first settlement in 1836.

Historic Bridges - Two bridges bearing the title of historic are in the Monticello area, one built in 1862 is still in use today. The triple-arch bridge over Deer Creek is located on a secondary road known as Hardscrabble Road off D-62 near Monticello. The bridge was built by Reuben Ely, Jr. and Reuben Ely, Sr.  Except for some of the stone used in the arches, which came from the Anamosa quarries, most of the stone in the bridge came from a little creek bed a short ways upstream.  The second historical bridge, known as Bowstring Bridge, is used as a walking bridge over a segment of the lake in Central Park. The bridge was manufactured in 1873 by the Massilon Iron Bridge Co. of Massilon Ohio. It once spanned the Maquoketa River on the Military Road near Monticello. At the bridge's completion the total cost of construction was $2,914.  In January of 1930, the bridge was moved to Freemont (northwest of Anamosa) and it spawned the Buffalo Creek.  In 1985, the bridge was moved again, this time to Central Park. The bridge, placed on the Register of Historic Places, may be the only one of its type in the state, and is the last tangible artifact of the Military Road.

OLIN
The oldest town in Jones County, Olin is located on Highway 38 in the southern part of the county.  The town places its origin through the Black Hawk purchase. The first settlement at the site was called Elk Ford, later changed to Walnut Fork, then changed again to Rome in 1842. The town was finally incorporated in 1878.  Being located along the Wapsipinicon River, Olin offers docks for boats and canoes. The river has been long noted for channel and flathead catfish, spring crappies, smallmouth bass and bullheads. Hunting is also offered at the nearby Muskrat Slough.
OXFORD JUNCTION
Located in the southeast corner of the county, two communities stand next to each other: Oxford Mills and Oxford Junction.  The first flour mill was built in Oxford Mills in 1857, the first plot was made in 1861. The Wapsi River at this point was the location of a ford until the first wooden bridge was built in 1865.  In 1875, the mill was enlarged to its capacity and the dam was enlarged to secure additional power to the dam.
WYOMING
Calkin's House - Dr. Martin Calkin's house and office in the town of Wyoming, located in the eastern section of the county, are listed in the Register of Historic Places. The beautiful authlentic structure is the oldest known medical office still containing the original items used by Dr. Calkins, who was Wyoming's first doctor in the 1870s.

Smallest National Park in the United States - It is located on main street in Wyoming. The monument across from the post office, on Calkin's property, was built as a tribute to the patriotism of Wyoming area citizens who organized a company of state militia in 1862.
