Before school ended for the summer, chemist, Dr. Lisa Stadtmueller with Kirkwood Community College, visited fourth graders at Carpenter School. Water samples from various sources such as rain water, creek water, cow tank water, etc. were collected and tested for eight common contaminants: lead, pesticides, nitrates/nitrites, pH, total hardness, chloride, and bacteria. Students were learning about the importance of water quality in the environment. This was an opportunity for hands-on learning.
