Wildcats host duals tourney

Wrestling

     Maquoketa Valley held its annual Wildcat Duals wrestling tournament Saturday, Jan. 6 in Delhi. Six teams competed, and the Wildcats went 2-3 against their five opponents.

     Included were a 54-21 loss to Dyersville Beckman, a 45-33 loss to Center Point-Urbana, a 51-24 win over Midland, a 45-20 triumph over Starmont, and a 62-9 loss to Wilton.

     Mitch Smith went 4-1 for the day, including three decision victories. Wildcats who scored pins during the tournament include Canyon Richardson, Tim Harmon, Chance Downs, Robert Hildebrand and Evan Elgin. Others who picked up wins other than forfeits were Parker Sternhagen and Michael Feldmann.

 

Girls basketball

     Sam Wall scored 23 points as Maquoketa Valley rolled to a 60-42 win at East Buchanan Jan. 2. Wall shot 10-for-19 from the field, and also had three assists and three steals. Payton Ries added 11 points, and Maddy Anderegg came off the bench to score eight points. Maci Freiburger had four steals, and Lydia Helle blocked two shots.

     MV (9-2, 11-2) led 38-22 at halftime.

    

Boys basketball

     Maquoketa Valley started 2018 with a pair of boys basketball losses.

     The Wildcats (2-8, 2-9) started the new year with a 58-47 loss at East Buchanan Jan. 2, despite a double-figure scoring night for both Tyson Tucker (15 points) and Trevor Elgin (12). Andrew Holtz and Brian Heims had six points apiece. Tucker also had seven assists, and Elgin made four steals. Getting four rebounds apiece were Heath Gibbs, Cole Willenbring, Tucker, Elgin and Heims.

     MV then lost a heartbreaker to Clinton Prince of Peace Jan. 5 in Delhi, despite a double-double from Elgin, who had 21 points and 10 rebounds. Tucker scored 11 points, and Willenbring added seven.
