MIDLAND RECAP

Wrestling

Midland came away with two champions at the Class 1A sectional wrestling tournament Feb. 2 at Cascade.

Freshman Damon Huston, with a 40-1 record, was champion at 106 pounds. After a bye in the quarterfinals, Huston pinned Nick Schmidt of Dyersville Beckman in 56 seconds, and scored a 6-4 decision over Jaymus Wilson of Alburnett in the finals.

Senior Brett Schoenherr, 37-3, also received a bye in the quarterfinals before pinning Kolby Morris of Alburnett in the semifinals, in 3:40. In the championship match, Schoenherr earned a 3-1 decision over Luke Recker of East Buchanan.

Carson Hunter finished third at 145. He won a third place match, but didn’t get the chance to wrestle for the true second spot as his semifinal opponent lost in the finals.

Taking fourth for the Eagles were Cayden Miller at 138 and Trevor Fitzpatrick at 195. Kaleb Westphal was sixth at 152.

As a team, Midland finished seventh with 112 points. The top two teams – Dyersville Beckman with 174 and Alburnett with 171 – qualified for the regional duals tournament.

The district meet will be Saturday, Feb. 9 at Jesup, starting at noon.
