Tree Board hosts tree sale, tree contest

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor,

Spring comes with opportunities to buy and plant trees. Monticello will have a tree sale for city residents at the end of April. Eight different species are to be sold at a reduced price of $20 to $40, depending on the tree species. The limit is one per household. If there is any remaining at the end of the day, they will be sold on a first come basis. A description of available trees is in the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall. Interested residents should come to the clerk’s office and pay for their choice of tree with a check or cash. They will receive a certificate, which they can redeem at All American Lawn & Landscape. The nursery is located at 16615 Rock Rd. north of Monticello off Highway 38. Most trees come in a number 5 pot, which is about a 5-gallon size. There is no warranty or guarantee and the trees must be planted within city limits.

Consider a tree’s mature size when planting because it is difficult to move them later. Look up at wires, rooflines, adjacent trees and satellite dishes. Look down at sidewalks, driveways, and property lines. Call Iowa OneCall at 800-292-8989 or go online to iowaonecall.com three business days before digging in order to locate all your utilities. This is a free service.

A second opportunity to buy trees is available to Alliant Energy customers. Operation Releaf is taking place in Linn County this spring and you don’t have to be a resident of Linn County. Go to alliantenergy.com, clock on Community and Stewardship. Then click on Operation Releaf. Print and mail the form by April 13. There are seven different tree species for $25 each.

We are holding the first BIG tree contest in Monticello until May 4. Trees on private or city property are eligible. Measure the tree circumference 4.5 feet above the ground. Submit your name, date, tree species (if you know it), and the tree location to the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall. If the same tree is submitted by two individuals, the first entrant will win.
