Starlighters to audition for ‘Gigi’

     Auditions for the Starlighters II production of the musical “Gigi” will be May 7-9 at the Anamosa theatre.

     Adults and teens are needed for the play, which tells the story of an enchanting and independent young lady learning about life and love in 1890s Paris. This emotional, lively musical with show-stopping numbers is set in elegant Paris. It was voted the best film of 1958. A revival was staged in an alternate version on Broadway in 2015.

     There are 25 roles in all, including Gigi, a soprano in her teen years; Gaston, a tenor who is a playboy in his 30s; Honore, a baritone who is Gaston’s uncle; a female role who is Honore’s butler; Mamita, an alto who is Gigi’s grandmother; Maitre du Gresen, a tenor who is a middle-aged lawyer; Aunt Alicia, a mezzo soprano who is a stern senior-aged character; and Charlee, Mamita’s chambermaid.

     Supporting roles include skating instructor, waiters, artist, receptionist, many of Gigi’s teen friends, three children: two girls and one boy about seven years of age. There are supporting roles for the mature male and female performers.

     The show is being directed by Robert J. Assink with music director Janet Bergman, both of Cedar Rapids and both experienced with Starlighter productions. Auditioners are requested to be prepared to read from the script, move and sing selected songs from the score.

     Audition dates: Sunday, May 7, for child roles at 2 p.m.; Sunday, May 7, for all roles at 2:30 p.m.; Monday, May 8, for teens and adults at 7 p.m.; and Tuesday, May 9, for all adults and teens at 7 p.m.

     Callbacks are Wednesday, May 10. Show dates are July 7-8 at 7:30 p.m., and July 9 at 2 p.m.
