contest winners

are announced

   Winners from the 2017 Jones County Nature Photography Contest have been announced.

     They are as follows:

     “Plants in Nature”:  1^st Place – Jeff Mathewson, Anamosa; 2nd Place – Sheri Lampe, Monticello; 3^rd Place – Brenda Hanken, Monticello.

     “Scenic Jones County”:  1^st Place –  Bill Schoon, Cedar Rapids; 2^nd Place – Sheri Lampe, Monticello;  3^rd Place – Marvin Rickels, Monticello.

     “Animals in Nature”:  1^st Place – Sheri Lampe, Monticello; 2^nd Place – Brenda Hanken, Monticello; 3^rd Place –Jeff Mathewson, Anamosa.

     “People in Nature”:  1^st Place:  Sheri Lampe, Monticello; 2^nd Place – Jada Kramer, Monmouth; and 3^rd Place, Brenda Hanken, Monticello.

     This year’s contest entries and winners can be viewed now through Labor Day at the Central Park Nature Center on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.

‘Busy bees’

afternoon

to be held

     Looking for something to do on Saturday, June 24? Buzz on over to Central Park for a fun-filled afternoon of learning about bees and what makes them so important with the naturalist intern, Anna James.

     This event will take place in the Central Park Nature Center at 1 p.m.  “Bee” ready to have fun learning while doing some fun bee activities.

‘Discovering our

night sky’ event

is scheduled

   Join Doug Slauson, and several other amateur astronomers, as we discover our night sky and its many marvelous views on Saturday, June 24 from 9 to 11 p.m.

     Anyone interested should meet at the depot building at Edinburgh Pioneer Village. Bring your binoculars, lawn chairs, insect repellant, and blankets. Several large telescopes will be available on site for public viewing.

     This event is sponsored by the Jones County Historical Society, Ross and Elizabeth Baty Monticello Public Library, and Jones County Conservation. In the event of rain or completely overcast cloud conditions, this event will be canceled.
