Eby’s Mill

artifact labeling

event is set

In 2013 the Jones County Conservation Board and the University of Iowa Office of the State Archaeologist, with the help from a team of AmeriCorps, volunteers, dozens of local students, and an archaeologist; conducted a restorative excavation of a cave site at the Eby’s Mill Wildlife Area.

Join archaeologist Bryan Kendall from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 4 in the Central Park Nature Center to help label artifacts, including many animal bones, found during the excavation and cave restoration. Bryan will discuss what the artifacts tell us about life for the prehistoric peoples who inhabited the cave periodically over the last 3,000 years.

Volunteers should pre-register by contacting Michele at 319-481-7987 or e-mailing naturalist@co.jones.ia.us by 4 p.m. Monday April 3. Sign up to help all day or choose a time slot of your preference. A light lunch will be provided for volunteers.

‘Woodcock walk’

is scheduled

A “Woodcock Walk” will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, April 7, at Whitewater Canyon. Join the Dubuque, Jackson and Jones County conservation departments as we search for and observe the seldom-seen woodcock.

The woodcocks’ mating ritual is truly a remarkable sight. This small, camouflaged, timber nesting bird has a few strange attributes and will amaze hikers with its aerial acrobat moves.

This event is free and all ages are welcome to attend. Dress for the weather and be prepared to hike a short distance.

Whitewater Canyon is located approximately 5 miles northeast of Cascade – take Curoe Road South and follow to park access road. Address: 29112 Ninth Ave., Bernard. Meet at the parking lot at the end of the access road.

For information, call any of the county conservation departments: Jackson 563-652-3783, Dubuque 563-556-6745 or Jones 563- 487-3541.
