Sheriff's Report

     A single-vehicle rollover accident took place on Nov. 29 at 10:22 p.m. on County Road E-45. Carrie Lee Fortin, 58, of Olin was driving a 2003 Chevy Suburban when she lost control due to slick road conditions. The vehicle ended up on its top in the north ditch. Both Fortin and her passenger were uninjured, having been evaluated on scene by Olin Ambulance. Fortin’s vehicle sustained approximately $7,000 in damages.

     A fatal single-vehicle rollover accident took place on Nov. 21 at 4:18 p.m. on County Road E-17. Darel Matthew Secrist, 52, of Monticello was driving a 2005 Ford F250 when he lost control. The rear-end of the truck entered the north ditch as the remainder of the truck stayed on the gravel road. Secrist slid sideways for a short distance before the truck flipped, beginning the rollover. The truck slid on its top for a short distance before rolling again. Secrist was ejected from the truck. The truck came to rest on the passenger side after a third roll. The Monticello Ambulance Service transported Secrist to Jones Regional Medical Center, where Iowa City Lifeguard was requested to land. Secrist’s vehicle sustained approximately $20,000 in damages.

     A single-vehicle rollover accident took place on Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. on Old Cass Road. Austin Edward Kirby, 15, of Anamosa was driving a 2003 Chevy Tahoe when he came around a curve on the gravel road. Another vehicle traveling the opposite direction appeared to cross the center of the road, causing Kirby to swerve. His brakes locked up as he lost control, entering the ditch where his vehicle rolled onto the passenger side. Kirby was privately transported to Jones Regional Medical Center for his minor injuries. His vehicle sustained approximately $8,000 in damages.

     A car versus deer accident took place on Nov. 23 at 6:36 a.m. on Highway 64. Derek Gage Trotter, 22, of Tripoli was driving a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe when he encountered a deer in the roadway. No injuries were reported. Trotter’s vehicle sustained an estimated $1,500 in damages.

     A single-vehicle accident took place on Nov. 23 at 3:30 a.m. on County Road D-62. Austin Jared Howell, 20, of Monticello was driving a 1997 Chevy S10 eastbound when he hit a patch of ice. Howell lost traction and slid to the center of the road, and then slid to the right before entering the ditch. No injuries were reported. There was $300 in damages to a fence owned by Ronald Schemmel of Monticello. Howell’s vehicle sustained approximately $5,000 in damages.
