A roller coaster week for Panthers

High school softball teams often have roller coaster seasons. The Monticello Panthers had a roller coaster week.
The Panthers went from the low of a 14-0 loss to Camanche, to a pair of lopsided wins, to a couple of losses in the weather-shortened Jesup Tournament.
Monticello came out of the week with records of 4-3 in the River Valley Conference, and 4-6 overall.
It started at home on Monday, June 4, as Camanche collected 11 hits, including three home runs, in a 14-0, five-inning win. The Panthers were held to one hit in the game, a triple by Lauren Ries.
Monticello bounced back in its next two games. At West Branch June 5, the Panthers routed the Bears 14-2 in five innings, scoring in every inning. Ries batted 4-for-4 with a double and four runs batted in. Taylor McDonald was 3-for-4 with a triple. Caitlyn Cruise hit a solo home run, and pitched a five-hitter for the win, striking out five. Tori McDonald and Megan James had two RBIs apiece.
Back home against Tipton June 7, Cruise fired a four-hitter in a 9-2 win. Monticello scored three runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead, an inning that included a sacrifice fly by Aspen Gillmore that scored two runs.
A two-run double by Jaelynn Kraus in the fourth made it 6-0, and the Panthers scored three more in the bottom of the sixth, including a two-run single by Taylor McDonald.
Taylor McDonald finished 3-for-4. DeLainy Fellinger and Kraus were both 2-for-4; Kraus had two doubles and three RBIs. Sydney Hansen and Fellinger also doubled.
Monticello then competed in the Jesup Tournament Friday, June 8, losing 14-4 to Dubuque Hempstead and 3-1 to West Cenral of Maynard.
The Panthers had four hits in the Hempstead game.
Monticello and West Central were tied 1-1 through five innings of that game, until West Central scored twice in the top of the sixth. The Panthers had six hits, and left eight runners on base. Taylor McDonald and James both went 2-for-3.
“We just did not put enough pressure on them offensively,” Monticello coach Bret McDonald said.
The Saturday games of the tournament were cancelled due to storms in the area.
