Monticello junior Lauren Ries will continue her girls golf season, as a result of the Class 3A regional first round tournament held Monday, May 15 at Pin Oak in Manchester.

Ries shot an 82 to be the overall winner in the tournament, and advances to the regional finals, to be held Monday, May 22 in Parkersburg. There, the top five individuals, including ties, will advance to the state tournament.

“Overall, it’s the most solid she’s played all year,” Monticello coach Joe Steen said of Ries.

Ries said she was happy with the performance.

“It was a pretty good day,” Ries said. “I putted better than I’ve putted all year, and my ball striking overall was the best it’s been.”

As a team, the Panthers finished fourth with a score of 420, to see their team season come to an end.

“All in all they did a good job today,” Steen said. “It’s a young team still, and the girls are learning how to play at that level.”

A highlight came from Olivia Goodyear, who shot a 59 on the front nine – her first round in the 50s this season.

Earlier, the Panthers competed in the River Valley Conference Meet May 10 in Muscatine, and tied for 10th place overall with a nine-hole score of 223.

Ries earned Elite all-conference status by finishing in a tie for sixth place with a score of 47. Marissa McNally was next on the team with a 54.

The Panthers had three other meets mixed in with those in the past couple of weeks. On May 5, they played host to Dyersville Beckman and won 195 to 215, with Ries earning medalist honors with a 42.

Ries was also medalist in a meet at Fillmore against Cascade May 11, shooting a 46. The Panthers won that one 213 to 226.

And on May 12, Monticello played host to Anamosa and lost 191 to 202. Ries shot a 43 to be medalist once again. McNally had a 50, and Lydia Franzenburg shot 52.
