Monticello junior Lauren Ries shot a 78 to finish second place in the Class 3A Regional Final Girls Golf Tournament Monday, May 22 to earn a return trip to the state tournament.

Ries earned the score, with rounds of 37 and 41, at Legend Trail Golf Course in Parkersburg.

She qualified individually, for achieving one of the top five scores.

“I knew the course really well,” Ries said. “I knew I had to start pretty well if I wanted to have a chance.”

It will be the third straight year Ries will play at State. She qualified individually last year and finished in a tie for 17th place. Two years ago, she was part of the Monticello team that advanced and placed fifth at State.

“She played solid,” Monticello coach Joe Steen said. “She putted well, managed the course really well, and didn’t put herself in trouble. She got up and down when she needed to. It was a good day.”

Britta Snyder of Gilbert was the meet medalist, with a 74.

Ries said she is hoping to improve over last year’s performance at State.

“I can’t wait; it should be fun,” she said. “I’m hoping to finish in the top 10.”

The state tournament will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, May 30-31 at Lake Panorama National Golf Course in Panora, Iowa.
