Public feedback needed at Jan. 31 facilities meeting

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor,

In-for-ma-tion: knowledge acquired in any manner; facts, data.

The Monticello School District community will have an opportunity on Jan. 31 to give feedback to OPN Architects about our school facilities. I hope you will try to attend this meeting. We need to gather facts and data in order to decide what will be the best plan to improve our school buildings. This opportunity for major school building improvements sometimes only happens once in 20, 60 or 90 years, as with the current school buildings.

The school district has almost $12 million available through the penny sales tax, or SAVE account, money which CANNOT be used in the general fund for salaries, utilities, etc. If a plan was to renovate and remodel existing buildings, please note that these improvements would have to be used by the children of Monticello 30 to 50 years, way beyond many of our lifetimes. Our older buildings need updated heating and cooling, new security entrances, more storage, new LED lighting, and updated building codes, to name just a few of the deficiencies. Does it make more sense to remodel now or build new; that could be the ultimate question?

This is a watershed moment for our community. Please make your voice heard and help us define the educational future of the children and young people of Monticello.

Thank you,

Bud Johnson

President, Monticello School Board
