Filling out a varsity team has been a challenge for Midland High School cross country in recent years, but the Eagles have enough runners on the boys’ team to earn team scores this season.

Six runners went out for the Eagle boys’ team. They include senior Jacob Ervin, sophomore Owen Doll, and freshmen Trent Rickels, Bryce Rushford, Tanner Stoll and Hunter Wink.

“I am thrilled that we can have a varsity team, but I would still like to have more depth,” third-year head coach Jon Eganhouse said. “The goal for this year is to finish as a team in the middle of the pack (in the Tri-Rivers Conference).”

Ervin is the sole returning senior. Coach Eganhouse said he looks for Ervin to be a steady contributor to the team.

Doll, the coach said, “has the potential to be a quality runner.

“I am waiting to see how my freshmen respond to the distance,” the coach added. “It may take a few meets until I can see their potential.”

Calamus-Wheatland should be among the favorites in the conference this season, the coach said.

“There are some young runners in the conference who can push their teams to be more competitive against Cal-Wheat,” the coach said. “The girls’ race will still be dominated by Bellevue Marquette and North Linn.”

Eganhouse said he was hoping to pick up more runners, both male and female, before school begins.
