The weather threw a change of schedule into the Monticello High School wrestling team’s routine last week, but the Panthers took advantage anyway.

Monticello was scheduled to compete in the Nashua-Plainfield tournament Saturday, Dec. 10. When winter weather made such a long trip more difficult, it was decided that the Panthers would instead go to the Zimmerman Invitational in Maquoketa.

“It was a big disappointment not getting to attend the Nashua meet,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “It was a totally different competition base that we haven’t seen before. But I totally understand why we didn’t attend. I was thankful we got to go to Maquoketa, so the team had the opportunity to wrestle.”

There, Chase Luensman was a champion in the 120-pound weight class, and the Panthers had three runner-up finishes and a pair of third place slots.

Taking second place were Alaina Sunlin at 106 pounds, Keegan Achenbach at 195, and Wade Picray at 220. Jordan Smith (182) and Tyler Kuper (285) were third.

“Chase dominated his bracket and looked very sharp doing it,” the coach said. “Keegan Achenbach continues to surprise everyone. Wade Picray had a great tournament and placed second in his first-ever varsity tournament.

“Alaina Sunlin continues to improve each match, and was right in her finals match. Tyler Ungs battled his way to a fourth place finish, and Tyler Kuper had a solid day while still adjusting to the heavyweight division.”

Garrett McCoy, Travis Heinrich and Mason Reuter also had fourth place finishes.

“We saw some positives, and every wrestler picked up a win,” coach Luensman said. “We need to start wrestling with more intensity, and that will be our focus throughout the next couple of weeks.”

The Panthers also competed in a dual meet at Camanche Dec. 8, and lost 57-24. Achenbach and Luensman picked up wins by fall, while Gavin Holub and Kuper won by forfeit.

“We are still working to get everyone to the proper weights and finding our groove as a team,” Luensman said. “We were aggressive, but not patient, so we gave up a lot of points.”
