WRESTLING

There were plenty of bright spots for the Monticello High School wrestling team as it began the 2016-17 season last week.

The first was a dual meet victory, as the Panthers opened the season with a 48-36 home win over North Cedar Dec. 1.

It was a short match, as each team brought a small lineup to the meet, and only four matches were contested. Monticello won two of those, with Tyler Kuper (285 pounds) and Chase Luensman (113) winning by fall.

Winning by forfeit were Wade Picray at 220 (Picray later wrestled a junior varsity match and won by fall), Alaina Sunlin at 106, Tyler Ungs at 145, Travis Heinrich at 152 and David Bagby at 195.

Then on Saturday, Dec. 3, the Panthers hosted the annual Dan Guilford Invitational. Monticello collected three finalists, including Kuper, who won the championship at 285.

“Tyler had a great tournament, claiming the first tournament championship of his high school career,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “He worked hard and gutted out an overtime victory for the championship.”

Chase Luensman at 113 and Lake Stahlberg at 195 were runners-up. Holub finished fourth at 182 pounds.  Sunlin was fifth at 106, and Jordan Smith placed sixth at 182 (Holub and Smith were in the same bracket).

“It is always fun to compete at home,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “I felt the team did well in staying focused throughout the day. We had some younger wrestlers win matches and place at the varsity level, which is a positive.

“We had some good matches throughout the day, but we have some stuff to address as well. We need to attack our opponent and set the tone of the match. We have some very good wrestlers that need to push their offense and be in command.”

The Panthers have a dual meet scheduled at Camanche Dec. 8, and will compete in the Nashua-Plainfield tournament Dec. 10.

North-Linn JV meet

The Panthers also competed in a junior varsity tournament Nov. 28 at North-Linn.

Ungs and Smith were division champions. Heinrich and Picray finished second. Mason Reuter and Bagby earned third place in their divisions, while Garrett McCoy, Andrew Wall and Sunlin all finished fourth.
