The Monticello High School wrestling team had just one home meet on the schedule for this season, and the Panthers made the most of it, sweeping three opponents in a quadrangular meet Dec. 6 at MHS.

The Panthers beat Clayton Ridge 66-18, topped Mid-Prairie 54-30, and overcame Iowa City Regina 45-27 in the duals, improving their dual meet record to 4-2.

Two Panthers pinned all three of their opponents in the home meet: Bo Kramer at 138 pounds and Chase Luensman at 145 and 152.

Lake Stahlberg had two pins and a decision win. Mark Sunlin and Kain Luensman each had two pins and a win by forfeit.

Others getting wins (other than forfeits) were Rylan Cooper and Adam Terry, both with pins in the Clayton Ridge match.

The home meet was also Senior Night, as the team honored seniors Hunter Kramer, Chase Luensman and Stahlberg between the first two duals.

Two days later, four Panthers asserted themselves as early-season two-time tournament champions during the Nashua-Plainfield Tournament Dec. 8.

Fresh off their titles in Monticello’s home Guilford Invitational Dec. 1, Sunlin, Kain Luensman, Chase Luensman and Stahlberg repeated their performances by winning their weight classes again at N-P.

Sunlin scored a pin and a decision win to take the title at 106 pounds. Kain Luensman won a pair of major decisions to claim the 126-pound crown.

Chase Luensman had two pins and a decision – narrowly missing a major decision in the finals with a 10-3 win – to be 145-pound champion. And Lake Stahlberg pinned all three of his opponents to earn the laurels at 220 pounds.

Those results helped the Panthers total 120 points, giving them fifth place as a team out of 13 schools.

Monticello also had a couple of fourth place finishes, from Owen Ray at 120 pounds and Bo Kramer at 138.

Junior varsity

The Monticello junior varsity team also competed at the Nashua-Plainfield tournament Dec. 8. No team scores were kept, but competition took place in 10 weight divisions.

Skylar Sharp went 2-1 in Division 8. Ty Jesenovec and Miles Hatchel both went 1-2, in Divisions 4 and 5, respectively.
