On the heels of a third place finish at the state meet last year, the Monticello High School girls track and field team made a strong impression in the first week of this year’s outdoor season.

Monticello crushed a field of 12 – many of them larger schools – to win the Dyersville Beckman Invitational on Friday, April 7.

A highlight was the performance of the 4x800-meter relay, which ran a winning time of 9:37.47 – the fastest time so far in the state of Iowa, all classes included.

“The meet was an entire team effort that proved we could compete with even the large school teams that were there,” Monticello coach Darren Reade said. “We knew we were going to have some good weather, so coach (Vallerie) Lynn and I put together a lineup that we thought could get some things a chance to qualify for the Drake Relays.

“The 4x8 and 4x4 did just that.”

The 4x400 team also won, in 4:08.15, the 10th fastest time in the state.

It was a big meet for Anna Loes, who won the 100-meter dash and was second in the 200. Monticello also won the distance medley relay.

“Anna has been dealing with some injuries recently, so we modified the workouts a lot (last) week, but she still came out and won the 100 and got second in the 200 before having to shut her down for the night.

“Maria Recker and Macy McDonough ran two really good hurdles races. Gabrielle Steiner had a solid night as well.”

Prior to the Beckman meet, Monticello opened the outdoor season at the Camanche Invitational April 4. Due to issues with timing and scoring, team scores, along with times for certain events, were unavailable at press time.

But it was a strong showing for the Panthers, who won three events and took second in three more.

Winning were Steiner in the 3,000, Corinne Gadient in the 800, and the distance medley team. Paige Holub took second in the 1,500, Keeley Anderson was second in the 400 hurdles (with teammate Shalay Bronemann third), and the 4x400 team was a runner-up as well.

“We saw a lot of good things already in our first outdoor meet,” Reade said. “Rachel Larabee ran her best race ever in the 3,000. The shuttle hurdle team is injury free this year, and ran a consistent time to where they were running at the end of last year.

“We tried a hybrid lineup for the distance medley relay, and they ran the best time of the season.”

The coach also praised Brianna Burmahl, who beat her personal best in the discus by 16 feet to take eighth place.
