Monticello High School has a short girls golf roster, with just six players, but that didn’t stop the Panthers from scoring a pair of dual meet victories to open the 2017 season.

The Panthers won by six strokes, 237 to 243, in a meet against Northeast April 6; and then topped Bellevue 188 to 223 in another dual meet April 10 at Bellevue.

Monticello followed that up with an eighth place finish in the North Scott Invitational April 13 at Glynns Creek Golf Course in Eldridge.

It was a strong start for Lauren Ries, who was meet medalist in both of the first two meets, shooting 48 at Northeast and 39 at Bellevue, tying the high school course record.

The Northeast meet, at Plum River Golf Course in Preston, was played in cold windy conditions, which coach Joe Steen said inflated scores.

“This was a very difficult day to play golf,” Steen said. “The course played very difficult as well. I thought our play was OK based on the limited amount of practice time we have had. I give credit to Olivia Goodyear, who has golfed for like a week and went out and played nine holes.”

Monticello’s scores were dramatically improved April 10 at Bellevue.

“We shot 49 strokes better than we did at Northeast,” Steen said. “I think this score indicates what we are capable of doing by the end of the season.”

Courtney Campbell shot a 45 in the Bellevue meet.

At North Scott, the Panthers played in their first 18-hole tournament of the season. Ries’ score of 83 was good for fourth place overall.

“Even finishing last among 4A and 5A schools, I saw a lot of positives,” the coach said. “Lydia Franzenburg shot a 49 over nine holes, which is a personal best.

“I think what I liked is the consistency with the scoring in spots two to five. We need that to continue if we are going to have success later on.”
