It has been a season of adaptation for the Monticello High School wrestling team, with weather and other factors causing numerous changes in the Panthers’ 2016-17 schedule.

The latest change was a good one. Monticello added a quadrangular meet at East Buchanan Tuesday, Dec. 20, giving the Panthers three more duals before heading into the holiday break.

Monticello gained experience, if not team victories, in the meet. The Panthers lost to East Buchanan 42-39, to MFL MarMac 66-15, and to Jesup 48-27.

“It was good that we got to wrestle,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “We needed to wrestle. A lot of people had good nights.”

Lake Stahlberg, wrestling at 195 pounds, won all three of his matches, with two pins and a forfeit. Chase Luensman was also 3-0, at 120 and 126, with a pin, a decision and a forfeit. Luensman carries a record of 11-1 into the holiday break, while Stahlberg is 6-2.

Alaina Sunlin recorded two first period pins while going 2-1. Also winning two out of three were Andrew Wall and Tyler Kuper. Garrett McCoy and Wall had one pin each. McCoy picked up his first varsity win in the match.

In the East Buchanan match, Monticello took a 36-18 lead when the Buccaneers forfeited three straight matches. But EB came back with four straight wins, including three forfeits, and held on for the three-point win.

The Panthers also led in the Jesup match, 21-6, after consecutive pins by Sunlin and McCoy. Jesup came back, winning seven straight matches to pull away for the team victory.

Monticello heads into the break with a record of 3-4 overall, including 3-1 in River Valley Conference dual meets.

“I feel pretty good about where we’re at mid-season,” coach Luensman said. “But it’s mid-season. We need to pick it up if we want to reach the goals we’ve set for the end of the season. The intensity is going to pick up.”
