The clear highlight of a 2-1 night for the Monticello High School wrestling team in a quadrangular meet at Anamosa Dec. 20 was a 50-30 win over the host Blue Raiders.

It avenged a 42-39 loss to Anamosa for the Panthers in a Nov. 29 meet.

“The first time we wrestled Anamosa we didn’t have our full team together,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “This time Bo Kramer, Wade Picray, Spencer Avery and Cole Wilson all stepped up and were in the lineup.

“It was a fun environment and a full team effort, top to bottom. It was intense and exciting.”

Monticello opened the meet by losing 48-25 to Center Point-Urbana, and then defeated Maquoketa Valley 66-24.

Kain Luensman won all three of his matches by pin. Others who went 3-0 without the benefit of forfeits were Mark Sunlin, two pins and a technical fall; and Chase Luensman, a pin, a major decision and a decision.

Wade Picray wrestled two matches and won by pin and decision. Others picking up pins during the meet were Lake Stahlberg, Spencer Avery, Owen Ray, Rylan Cooper and Bo Kramer.

“I love the energy Spencer Avery brings to the mat,” coach Luensman said. “He had a huge win against Anamosa that sparked a ton of momentum our way.

“Chase beat a ranked kid from Center Point, and Kain beat a returning state qualifier from Maquoketa Valley. Wade Picray had a very solid night at heavyweight, going 3-0 and getting a big win against Anamosa. Mark Sunlin and Lake Stahlberg had a solid night as well.”

The coach said it was a good way to finish before the holiday break.

“We are having a lot of individual success, and the team is starting to take form,” he said.
