Panthers bypass North Linn meet

CROSS COUNTRY

Heavy rain on Friday, Oct. 6 did not cause the Oct. 7 North Linn Cross Country Invitational to be cancelled, but it did prompt the Monticello Panthers to bypass the meet.

Panther head coach Dan Sauser issued the following statement about the decision:

“After a lot of discussion with my coaching staff, I felt it was best not to compete on Saturday.

“There were many variables to the decision. What weighed as most critical was that we have been dealing with a number of injuries and the course conditions could have magnified some of the injuries. My greater priority was to make sure we were ready to compete this coming week at the River Valley Conference Meet on Thursday.

“Ideally, I would have preferred to have one more meet before the conference meet. However, I didn't want to put any of our runners in a situation that would have hurt their chance to compete and to compete well at the conference meet.

“This was solely my decision. I know we've got a lot of competitors on this team and some were going to be disappointed by this decision. However, as the head coach, I often need to differentiate the micro from the macro and look at what is best overall for the team.”

Monticello will compete at the conference meet Thursday, Oct. 12 at the Kickers Soccer Park in Iowa City, the same place where the Regina meet was held back on Aug. 31.

Start times: 4:30 p.m. for middle school boys and girls, 5 p.m. for varsity and JV girls, and 5:30 p.m. for varsity and JV boys.
