Monticello picked one of the best times to come up with one of its best efforts of the season: the River Valley Conference Boys Track and Field Meet Thursday, May 4 in Bellevue.

“All year we’ve struggled with team effort,” Monticello coach Greg Williams said. “(Thursday) night was the first meet, as a team, where we gave great effort, which to me is more important than where we placed.”

The Panthers were fifth in the 12-team field, scoring 65 points. Cascade was the team champion with 109, Mid-Prairie scored 96 to take second, and Northeast of Goose Lake was third with 81.

Aaron Loes was a conference champion for the Panthers, winning the 3,200-meter run in 10:02.05. He also was seventh in the 1,600.

The Panthers also had a pair of runner-up finishes: Tyler Hospodarsky in the 800 and Avery Martensen in the 110 hurdles. Max Keleher took fourth in both the 100 and 200 dash events. Also taking fourth was the 4x200 relay team.

Coach Williams also said he was pleased with the efforts of the team’s younger competitors.

“We’re getting some young people to compete up to their ability,” Williams said.

State qualifying Thursday

The Panthers will hit the road on Thursday, May 11 for the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet, to be held at North Fayette Valley in West Union.

The top two finishers in each event will automatically qualify for the May 18-20 state meet, as will the next eight best from across the state.
