Panther JV wins two of first three

GIRLS BASKETBALL RECAP

Junior varsity

Three games got the junior varsity girls basketball season under way for Monticello.

The Panthers (2-1) tipped off their season with a 39-24 win at Bellevue Nov. 22.

Monticello led 15-11 at halftime, but outscored the Comets 17-0 in the third quarter to break the game open.

“We played a little tight in the first half,” Monticello coach Chuck Welsch said, “but played a lot better defense (in the second half) that turned into some easy baskets.”

Gabrielle Steiner scored 15 points and Aspen Gillmore added 13 for Monticello. Carly Hayen added six points, Jaelynn Kraus had three and Payton Jaeger scored two.

At Northeast of Goose Lake Nov. 29, the Panthers suffered their first loss of the season, 28-17. Lydia Franzenburg led Monticello with seven points, while Emmi Sampson, Marissa Recker, Gillmore, Steiner and Kraus had two points each.

“Northeast was way more physical than we were,” Welsch said. “That and poor shooting added up to the loss.”

The Panthers bounced back with a big effort at West Branch Dec. 2, winning 40-22 after leading 22-9 at halftime. A balanced scoring attack was led by Gillmore with seven points. Franzenburg scored six, Hayen and Recker had five apiece, Emily Schlarmann, Steiner and Jaeger had four each, Kraus had three, and Leah Holub added two.

Eighth grade

Gabby Guilford scored 16 points and Tori McDonald added 12 as the Panthers cruised to a 48-15 home win over Camanche Dec. 1.

Beka Prull had nine points, Karli Recker added six, DeLainy Fellinger scored three and Reese Cox had two.

“Once again our defense led the way,” Monticello coach Bret McDonald said. “We really controlled the pace of the game and would not let Camanche get into their offense. We also did a good job of limiting them to just one shot.”

The B game ended in a 5-5 tie. Scoring for Monticello were Megan Mahoney with three points and Katie Sauser with two.

“We played our best game of the year as far as running the offense and getting stops on defense,” coach McDonald said.

Seventh grade

Monticello faced two opponents recently in seventh-grade girls basketball. On Nov. 21, the Panthers played host to Bellevue, and lost a pair of games. Bellevue beat Monticello Red 24-13, and topped Monticello Black 20-14.

Camanche paid a visit to Monticello Dec. 1, and scored victories of 24-18 over the Red and 5-4 over the Black.

“The girls have been working hard and have made a lot of progress this season,” Monticello coach Joe Steen said. “These games were a lot closer than the first time we played those teams.”
