New school facilities attract the best of the best

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the Editor,

In 1976 I had the privilege to student teach in Monticello, Iowa. I fell in love with the school system and the community. To me, it was the perfect Norman Rockwell, small town picture. Bikes leaning against the fence at the pool, homes open, keys in the car…

In 1980, I chose to leave teaching in Southeast Iowa, and was in search of a teaching position in Northeast Iowa. Nothing was available, but there was an opening at a camp for individuals with special needs. I thought it might be a good job to do for a couple of years, like the Peace Corp, while continuing to look for a teaching job… I loved teaching. We had the flexibility to go anywhere. Our number one priority was getting into a good community, with a great school system, to raise a family. We feel we found that community in Monticello.

I have been fortunate, with my work, to be a part of a program that has seen constant growth, in all ages, facilities and staffing. It is our facilities that allow us to recruit the best of the best in staff. We are hiring a growing number of individuals, like myself nearly 40 years ago, who are looking to put roots into a community. I want those roots to be planted in Monticello, Iowa… just as mine were. In small communities, much revolves around the school system. When exceptional people and businesses look to call a community home, they often rate the schools as their number one priority.

We are surrounded by good communities with good schools. We want the person/family/business looking for a new home to choose Monticello.

Our Monticello school system is very fortunate; with an exceptional staff, the latest in computer technology, and a good School Foundation to continue to give the students of Monticello opportunities other students do not receive.

It is time to improve our facilities and build a middle school that meets today’s standards.

I hope you will join me in voting “YES” for a new middle school on Sept. 11.
