Several local and area businesses were burglarized and robbed overnight on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 11-12.

Those affected include: Java Jones, Bipsy and Bopsy Boutique, the Monticello Aquatic Center, and The Grove Bar & Grill in Scotch Grove. In some cases, money was taken from the establishment, in others, minor damage was done when the subject(s) gained entrance. At the pool, not only was cash taken from the concession stand, but ice cream treats were stolen as well.

In a public statement from Police Chief Britt Smith, he said the common theme in these instances is the targeting of exterior doors without deadbolt locks, as well as accessing money left overnight in cash registers.

“I would like to stress that all exterior doors should be equipped with deadbolt locks,” advised Smith. “Exterior doors equipped with only standard locking door knobs are insufficient to keep would-be thieves from entering.”

Smith suggested businesses install either a deadbolt lock, or as an alternative, a hook and latch lock, on the inside of all doors.

“Also please remove all money from the cash register daily,” added Smith. “Leave the drawer open so that it is clear that the drawer is empty and there is no money.” Smith said this act results in little-to-no damage to the register when thieves attempt to gain access.

Smith said money should be taken off the business premises. If that’s not possible, “secured in a hidden safe or somewhere unlikely to be found.”

In addition, Smith recommended the installation of security cameras.

“As cost effective and easily installed, they should be a standard piece of security equipment every business implements.”
