The Monticello Public Library is hosting an event just for dads and their daughters, grandfathers and granddaughters, big brothers and little sisters.

The “Daddy & Daughter Hair Workshop” will be held in the library on Saturday, Jan. 13 from 10-11 a.m. All are welcome to attend the family-fun, free event.

Library Youth Director Penny Schmit said she saw other libraries offering similar “daddy and daughter” events and thought this would be a fun opportunity to incorporate at the Monticello library.

“It brings families together,” she said. “Moms and grandmas are also welcome to come and watch.”

The workshop brings local stylists from Oasis Salon and Spa, Pure Image Salon and Spa, and Great Clips together to teach dads about basic hair care for their daughters/granddaughters/sisters. Schmit said in some households, the moms leave for work early and the dads are left to get the kids ready for school, which includes hair styling.

“Hopefully this will help them learn a few things,” she said.

The stylists will instruct attendees on simple techniques such as:

     • Taking care of tangles

     • Ponytail basics

     • Simple braids and buns

“It’s the basic how-tos,” said Schmit. “They’ll offer tips and information on how to get the job done.”

The one-hour workshop is open to all ages.

“It’s not just for dad-daughter combos,” encouraged Schmit.

Depending on the number of participants, the “Daddy & Daughter Hair Workshop” may extend past one hour. Schmit said everyone will receive some assistance if needed.

You are welcome to bring in your own supplies for the event if your young lady prefers a certain ponytail or brush to others. However, brand new combs, de-tangler, and hair ties will be provided.

Registration is not required, but appreciated to ensure there are plenty of stylists and supplies on hand. Contact the library at 319-465-3354 or stop in at 205 E. Grand St. in Monticello.

“This event fosters a great family connection,” said Schmit. “Some dads honestly have no idea how to make a ponytail, so they’ll learn some great skills while having fun with their daughters.”
