The weather was better for the Monticello High School girls soccer team at the Northeast Tournament April 28 in Goose Lake, even if the results weren’t.

The Panthers (1-4) played a pair of matches on a a breezy but sunny day, losing to West Liberty 3-1 and falling 1-0 to Northeast in the consolation match.

Against West Liberty, Monticello fell behind 2-0 on a penalty kick five minutes into the match and a short shot seven minutes later.

The Comets took a 3-0 lead with 17 minutes left in the second half on another penalty kick after Monticello was called for a hand ball in the penalty area. The Panthers got on the scoreboard with eight minutes left, when McKenna Bell booted the ball over the West Liberty goalkeeper.

“We played well, matched them in corner kicks taken, and they only had four more shots on goal than we took,” Monticello coach Bruce Feuling said.

Cassie Gillmore had three saves as the Panther goalkeeper. Rylee Bauer had four shots on goal.

Monticello lost a heartbreaker in the consolation match, as Northeast scored the only goal off a crossing pass with eight minutes to play.

The Panthers had 10 shots on goal in the match, including three each from Sophia Ahlrichs and Jordan Lorenzen, and two from Bell. Gillmore made five saves.

“I was very proud of our team’s effort in both matches,” Feuling said. “Playing back-to-back in a tournament setting is not easy, and I thought our team responded well.”
