Monk no-hits Holy Cross

     Mitch Monk fired a no-hitter in the first game of a home doubleheader against Holy Cross, the highlight of a three-game week for the Monticello Cubs semi-pro baseball team.

     The Cubs (2-10 in the Eastern Iowa Hawkeye League, 7-16 overall) wound up splitting that twinbill, winning the first game 11-0 in five innings, and losing the second game 6-2. The games were played Sunday, July 30 at Monticello’s Dailey Field.

     Monticello jumped to a 5-0 first inning lead, and 7-0 after two, while Monk hurled the no-hitter. He finished with two strikeouts and no walks.

     “Mitch was dialed in on the mound,” Cubs player-manager Garett Hanken said. “We capitalized on some of their mistakes and put this one away quickly.”

     Ben Stutt batted 2-for-2 with a two-run homer and four total runs batted in. Jacob Thompson went 2-for-3.

     In the second game, Holy Cross scored three runs in the third inning to erase a 1-0 Monticello lead, and added three more in the fifth. Tanner Felton and Kyle Sperfslage each had two hits for the Cubs.

     Prior to those games, the Cubs played in the first round of the Dyersville Tournament Friday, July 28, and lost 10-1 to Peosta. Monticello allowed five runs in the top of the first inning.

     “We got jumped early and didn’t recover,” Hanken said. “We had quite a few hard-hit balls, but couldn’t seem to get a break when we needed one to get something started.”

     Following games at Cascade July 31 and at home against Farley Aug. 1, the Cubs will face Worthington in the Holy Cross Tournament Aug. 3 at 7 p.m.
