Monticello showed some signs of improving, but suffered a pair of losses in girls soccer last week.

The Panthers began the week by playing host to Mid-Prairie April 17, and lost by a score of 4-0.

“Even though we lost 4-0, I thought Cassie (Gillmore) played well in goal,” Monticello coach Bruce Feuling said. “Our defense in the second half was much better than in the first half, as we limited their shots on goal to only eight.”

The Golden Hawks led 3-0 at halftime, and scored just one goal in the second half, on a penalty kick. The Panthers were kept off the scoreboard.

“Our offense is still struggling to string together a successive assault that results in a goal,” Feuling said. “While we have a lot of good individual efforts, we need to work together better as a team.”

Monticello then traveled to Alburnett to face Cedar Valley Christian Tuesday, April 18; and again lost by a 4-0 margin. CVC scored a single goal in the first half, but tacked on three more in the first 20 minutes of the second half.

“Our energy was good, but our spacing, ball touches and shot selection need to be improved,” the coach said. “The defense was better this match, with fewer shots being allowed than in the previous two matches.”
