Monticello showed it matches up very well with the rest of the River Valley Conference, during the RVC Girls Track and Field Meet Thursday, March 23 at Cornell College in Mount Vernon.

The Panthers won two events and took second in two others during the meet, in which no team scores were kept.

Monticello opened with a school indoor record in the 4x800, and Anna Loes later won the 200-meter dash.

“I always have felt that the 4x800 sets the tone for the rest of the meet, and our girls set the tone for us very nicely,” Monticello coach Darren Reade said. “They broke their own RVC indoor record by 10 seconds. Anna Loes winning the 200 was a nice boost for her confidence this early in the season.

“It was a competitive night for our girls, and fun to see them excited to do so well.”

Gabby Gadient finished second in the 800, and the 4x400 team also was second.

Monticello also competed in the University of Dubuque Indoor Meet March 17, as the 4x800 team took first place and Corinne Gadient was second in the 800.

The Panthers were ninth as a team in a meet that included mostly larger schools.

“There were more teams this year than last year, but we placed higher as a team this year, and we were the highest-scoring small school at the meet,” Reade said.

‘The 4x800 team ran about 14 seconds faster than they did last year at the same meet,” the coach said. “Any time we have a 4x800 team go sub-10 minutes this early in the season is a very good sign of things to come.”
