Staff report

A former Monticello High School graduate passed away last week, Friday, June 29. She sustained serious, life-threatening injuries stemming from a domestic disturbance.

Stephanie Bowling, 24, of Marion was a 2012 graduate of MHS.

Prior to her passing, Bowling was placed in intensive care at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa.

According to Marion Police, officers responded to an apartment complex in Marion around 3 a.m. on June 28. Bowling was found unresponsive at the scene, and has since passed away.

Cody Brown, 27, was arrested, and is facing a charge of domestic assault with intent to inflict serious injury. He was booked in the Linn County Jail.

A MHS classmate of Bowling’s, Emily Burds, created a GoFundMe account to help raise money for Bowling’s two young daughters she leaves behind.

“The MHS Class of 2012 is a family and we come together for one of our own,” the GoFundMe page states. “We are coming together now to raise money for Steph’s children and her family to help ease some of the financial burden during this terrible time.

“No one should ever suffer such tragedy or violence at the hands of another. Domestic violence is a prevalent and disturbing problem in our world today and we hope this fundraiser can help raise awareness of this important issue so that perhaps others can be saved.

“We thank you in advance for your generosity.”
