Mary Kathryn Hanken passed away peacefully on September 5, 2017 at St. Francis Hospice, Honolulu, Hawaii, surrounded by her close friends.  

A Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held 1:00 Saturday afternoon, Dec. 16, 2017 at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Monticello with interment in the St. John Cemetery. Friends may register after 12 noon Saturday at the church.    Rev. Reed Stockman will officiate at the services.   Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello is assisting the family with the service. 

Mary was born January 21, 1947 at the John McDonald Hospital, Monticello.  She was the daughter of Frederick and Ellen Bohlken Hanken.   The eldest of 4 children, Mary graduated from the Monticello Community Schools with the class of 1965.  She attended the University of Iowa, graduating from the College of Pharmacy in 1970. 

After residing in Phoenix, Ariz., she later moved to Hawaii where she continued her career as a hospital pharmacist for many years.  As a result of her dedication the lives of many women and children were preserved and enriched. 

Mary was an avid traveler, visiting many countries, including, China, Japan, Ecuador and Ireland to name a few.   She also made frequent trips to visit family in the Midwest.   Mary enjoyed spending time with her Iowa family and sharing mementos and stories of her travels with her nieces and nephews.   Mary was a life-long member of St. John Lutheran Church in Monticello. 

Mary is survived by her siblings, Ann (Robert) Briggie, Ruth (Dave) McNamara, and Bill (Sue) Hanken; her nieces and nephews, Ben (Joey) McNamara, Shawna (Andrew) Kachel, Heather McNamara, Joseph Briggie, and Molly (Connor) Grask, Lauren (Quinn) Robinson, Erin and Katherine Briggie, a great-niece, Emerson McNamara, and great-nephew Colton Kachel.  Mary was preceded in death by her parents.
