Monticello racked up three victories in junior varsity girls basketball action last week.

“It was a great week, and the team keeps playing better every game,” Monticello coach Chuck Welsch said.

The Panthers (14-2, 16-3) started the week with a 41-25 home win over North Cedar Jan. 24. Gabrielle Steiner scored 11 points, Aspen Gillmore added 10, Sydney Hansen and Caitlyn Cruise had eight points each, while Jaelynn Kraus and Lydia Franzenburg had two apiece.

On Jan. 26, Monticello played host to Maquoketa Valley, and won 40-18. Gillmore led the way with 15 points, all in the first half. Hansen scored seven, Steiner, Kraus and Cruise had four apiece; Emily Schlarmann and Franzenburg added three each.

“That was our best game of the year,” Welsch said, “against a very good one-loss team. The girls played with a lot of energy on both ends of the floor.”

The winning continued Jan. 27 at Durant, with a 39-18 decision. Kraus scored 11 points, Cruise, Hansen and Gillmore had six apiece, Schlarmann and Steiner had five each, and Payton Jaeger added one.

Corrections: It was Marissa Recker, not Maria, who had 10 points in the first half against Mid-Prairie Jan. 20. In the same game, Steiner scored 10 points in the first half.
