JV opens new year by winning three

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Three wins made it a big week for the Monticello junior varsity girls basketball team to start the new year.

The Panthers played host to Bellevue Jan. 3, and outscored the Comets 24-8 in the second half to win 38-21. Aspen Gillmore led a balanced scoring attack with eight points, Carly Hayen and Jaelynn Kraus each added seven, Sydney Hansen, Gabrielle Steiner and Maria Recker had four apiece; and Emily Schlarmann and Emmi Sampson chipped in two each.

“It was a solid game by everyone,” Monticello coach Chuck Welsch said. “In the second half we played with a lot more energy. We ran the floor better, and the pressure defense was a lot better.”

Monticello won a close home game against Wilton Jan. 6, by a score of 35-30. Caitlyn Cruise scored 11 points, including a pair of three-point baskets, in two quarters of play. Hayen also played just two quarters, and had 10 points. Schlarmann and Hansen had four points apiece; Recker, Kraus and Gillmore scored two each.

On Jan. 7, the Panthers traveled to Troy Mills to play North Linn, and won 32-25. Hayen led the way with 10 points, Hansen had nine, Cruise contributed six, Gillmore totaled three, while Kraus and Steiner tallied two apiece.

“North Linn is a very good team, with one loss to Cascade (coming into this game),” Welsch said. “We played solid defense as a team. Gillmore and Cruise did an excellent job on their best player, and we moved the ball a lot better on the offensive end for some easy baskets.”

The Panthers are 9-2 on the season, including 8-2 in River Valley Conference games.
