January accident results in serious charges

     The Monticello Police Department released the report of an accident that took place on Jan. 29 at around 11:11 a.m. on Business Highway 151 South/S. Main Street near Kromminga Motors.

     Roadways were snow-covered leading up to the accident. Rick Allen Wiebers, 67, of Onslow was driving a 2014 Ford F150 south on S. Main Street when he crossed the centerline. Wiebers hit Danny Chris Saunders, 68, of Monticello, who was driving a 2013 Ford Expedition XLT. Saunders was traveling north on S. Main Street. At the point of impact, Wiebers was fully in the northbound lane of travel.

     According to the MPD report, Wiebers had the odor of an alcoholic beverage, had empty alcohol containers inside his vehicle, and submitted to a preliminary breath test at the scene of the accident. He blew a .079 BAC level and admitted to consuming alcohol prior to the accident.

     Wiebers was injured as a result of the accident and was transported by Monticello Ambulance to Jones Regional Medical Center in Anamosa. Saunders was transported by the Anamosa Ambulance Service to St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids for his injuries.

     Saunders’ passenger, his wife Janie, 69, was extricated from the vehicle by the Monticello Fire Department. She was also transported by the Anamosa Ambulance Service to St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids for her injuries

     Wiebers’ and Saunders’ vehicles both sustained approximately $6,000 in damages.

     Weibers was cited for driving on wrong side of two-way highway and no valid driver’s license.
