It’s not too late

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor,

It’s not too late to SAVE OUR DAM, but the final decision is fast approaching. Next week, there will be an open PUBLIC MEETING on Wednesday, Aug. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at the Monticello Community Building. Everyone with an opinion, pro or con, is encouraged to attend this meeting and share your thoughts and concerns. Hosted by the Jones County Historical Preservation Commission, this meeting will have federal and state agencies whose approval is required before the dam could be destroyed. Public support/opposition are part of the decision process, as is historical value (including emotional historic value, ties to the community, etc.) This is the time to stand up and be heard, because after this – it may be too late.

The other meeting of note is the Conservation Board meeting scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 24 at 6:45 p.m. at the Central Park Nature Center. The only item on the agenda is a “possible” vote on the dam’s destruction. The Board has twice delayed this vote; apparently the growing public opposition is having an effect. This is also a PUBLIC MEETING and input is encouraged regardless of which position you take. This could be the very last chance to SAVE OUR DAM.

The more people who can attend these meetings, the more effective our message will be. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend.
