Help ID Eby’s Mill artifacts, April 4

In 2013, the Jones County Conservation Board and the University of Iowa Office of the State Archeologist conducted a restorative excavation of a cave site at the Eby’s Mill Wildlife Area. This was done with help from a team of AmeriCorps, volunteers, dozens of local students, and an archeologist.

Now, you can join Archeologist Bryan Kendall on Tuesday, April 4, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help label some of the artifacts found at the Eby’s Mill site, including many animal bones found during the excavation and cave restoration. Kendall will discuss what the artifacts tell about life for the prehistoric peoples who inhabited the cave periodically over the last 3,000 years.

The artifact-labeling project will take place inside the Central Park Nature Center.

Volunteers for this event should pre-register by calling 319-481-7987 by 4 p.m. on Monday, April 3. You can sign up for the entire day or choose a time slot. Lunch will be provided.
