GJCF BBQ Contest adds kids competition

     The Wolken Dental BBQ Contest has been gaining popularity at the Great Jones County Fair. This year there is a new addition: the Kids BBQ Contest. The GJCF BBQ is now a sanctioned Iowa Backyard BBQ Contest.

     The contest takes place during the final day of the fair, Sunday, July 23.

     Categories and judging times include:

     • 1 p.m. – Burgers

     • 1:30 p.m. – Chicken

     • 2 p.m. – Pork Loin

     • 2:30 p.m. – Beef Ribs

     • 3 p.m. – Pork Ribs

     • 3:30 p.m. – Pizza

     • 4 p.m. – Wolken Family Bean Contest

     • 4:30 p.m. – Brisket

     There is a $10 entry fee per category; the bean contest is free with an paid BBQ contest entry. Each category pays $150 for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place. (There is a $250 payout for first place only in the bean contest.)

     The Kids BBQ Contest is for ages 15 and under. Categories and judging times include:

     • Noon – Build a Burger

     • Loin Chops

     There is a $5 entry fee per category. Each category pays $50 for first place and $25 for second place.

     Each team that enters both categories will receive a free charcoal grill while supplies last.

     In addition to the judging times, there will also be a food safety and BBQ workshop presented to the public at 11 a.m.
