Monticello earned four individual championships, and had five finalists, during the Dan Guilford Invitational Dec. 1 at Monticello High School.

The Panther wrestlers were led by champions Mark Sunlin (106 pounds), Kain Luensman (126), Chase Luensman (145) and Lake Stahlberg (220).

“It was a great tournament,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “We added some more teams (this year), and the boys responded to the competition.

“Mark Sunlin is having a great start, Kain wrestled confidently, and Chase beat two ranked wrestlers to capture his third invitational championship of his career. Lake capped the night with a great win over second-ranked Owen Grover from Beckman.”

Also reaching the finals was Ethan Tallman, who scored two pins to reach a tournament championship match for the first time before suffering a concussion in the finals.

“Ethan took a hard slam in the finals,” coach Luensman said. “He will need to take some time to get healed up. Ethan is a tough kid, and will come back strong. He wrestled a great tournament until the injury stopped him.”

The Panthers were seventh out of nine teams in the tournament.

Monticello also had a third place finish from Owen Ray at 120 pounds. Ray went 3-1, winning all three by fall.

“Owen Ray and Rylan Cooper both had a great tournament in the first varsity tournaments of their careers.”

Rylan Cooper was fifth at 126 pounds, and Adam Terry placed sixth at 285.

Earlier, the Panthers zipped to Anamosa Nov. 29 for a quadrangular meet, winning one of their three matches. Monticello lost to Camanche 57-24, came up just short in a 42-39 defeat against Anamosa, and scored a 48-22 win over Durant.

Forfeits were big factors in the Panther losses; they gave up 30 points in forfeits against Camanche, and 18 against Anamosa.

“We have a very diverse team as far as experience and where they are in the lineup,” the coach said. “As a coach I have to make individual decisions for what is best for each person. We still have a few injuries from the fall season. Adding these factors together makes it difficult to win duals.”

Kain Luensman had two pins and a forfeit win to go 3-0. Lake Stahlberg won three matches by forfeit. Chase Luensman wrestled twice and won by pin and major decision. Mark Sunlin was 2-1 with a technical fall and a forfeit; Ethan Tallman went 2-1 with a pin and a forfeit. Dylan Bowser won one match by pin.

“I thought the team competed hard and did a great job of improving with each dual,” coach Luensman said. “We just need to get everyone healthy and to improve each day at practice.”

The Panthers will host a quadrangular meet Dec. 6, wrestling Mid-Prairie, Iowa City Regina and Clayton Ridge, starting at 5:30 p.m. As it will be the last home meet of the season, it will also be Senior Night.

Taking second place were Rylan Cooper, Ty Jesenovec, Colin Jordan, Owen Ray, Skyler Sharp and Ethan Tallman.

Jericho Strouf had a third place finish.

In fourth were Miles Hatchel, Chaz McClendon and Gage Sharp.
