Monticello faced some of the toughest bowling competition around Eastern Iowa last week, with four different opponents defeating the Panthers in two road meets.

The Panthers opened the week with a dual meet at Durant Dec. 4, with the host Wildcats winning 2899 to 2555 in the boys’ match, and 2115 to 2027 in the girls’ event.

While the competition was tough, Monticello coach Brian Meyer also lamented both teams’ struggles with making spares.

“We try to pride ourselves on the fundamentals,” Meyer said. “We teach balance at the line and controlling the lane, which means we’re not going to strike with everybody.

“So with that, we need to make our spares, and that’s where we’re not executing. We’re not going to necessarily win because of spares, but if you don’t make spares, you’re going to lose.”

At Durant, the Panther girls (0-7) trailed by just 25 pins after the individual round, and wound up losing by 88 pins overall.

Three different Panthers posted games over 170. Grace Heinrich had a 179, Keeley Anderson rolled a 177 and Jordan Lorenzen had a 176 game on the way to a team-high 313 two-game series.

“They are definitely learning,” Meyer said. “They’re progressively getting better; that’s all you can ask.”

Monticello’s boys (2-5) were 131 pins down after the individual round. Durant posted a 276 Baker game, on the way to winning the Baker round 1023 to 810 to pull away for the final 344-pin victory.

Caleb Gillmore had a 234 game on the way to a 424 series. Jacob Farmer had a 199 single game, and Alex Fagan had a 192 game and 353 two-game result.

“It was the same scenario as we’ve been facing the last two years,” Meyer said. “We’re close in individuals, and then Baker comes and we just can’t execute. They shot a 276 game, and you could just see our whole demeanor drop.

“Durant has very accomplished bowlers at home. We need to learn to watch the opponent, see what they’re doing with the lane, and we need to try to emulate that as best we can.”

On Dec. 6, the Panthers competed in a quadrangular meet at Horizon Lanes in Bellevue.

Both Monticello teams finished fourth. The boys totaled 2592 pins, 37 higher than they scored at Durant; and the girls finished with 1952, with a season-best Baker score of 701, which was good enough to beat Bellevue.

“I think they bowled better at Baker than they’ve ever bowled before,” Meyer said. “So they’re coming.”

For the boys, Gillmore had a pair of 200 games at Bellevue, posting a 206-206–411 series. Noah Arduser rolled a 208 as part of a 379 series, and Levi Temple had a 187 game and 351 series.

“We’ve seen some 2A teams (Monticello is Class 1A for bowling),” and it’s OK. That’s how we get better, seeing what the opponents are doing and what makes them successful You learn from that.”

For the Panther girls, Evee Krouse had the top individual score (159) and top team series (325).
