Finally the Iowa House approves texting, driving bill

I have worked hard since being elected to the Legislature to improve Iowa’s distracted driving laws. I’ve led the effort to pass multiple bipartisan bills in the Iowa Senate, only to see them die in the Republican-controlled Iowa House. The first few years as I pushed for changes, the Governor was a quiet supporter, but he has recently become more vocal in his support of my legislation.

The Iowa Department of Transportation reports that 1,100 crashes in 2015 were caused by distracted driving that involved a phone or other devices. Of those crashes, 14 resulted in fatalities, and there were 601 injuries.

That’s one reason Iowa may soon join 39 other states with stricter laws for texting while driving. SF 234, approved by the Iowa Senate and House, is headed to the Governor for his signature. It makes texting while driving a primary offense, but does allow drivers to talk on their phones.

This is another step in the right direction for helping law enforcement to more effectively crack down on distracted driving. Currently, Iowans cannot be pulled over for texting while driving unless they are committing another offense. Iowa is one of only five states in the country that enforces texting while driving in this manner.

Perseverance is often key to being successful in the Iowa Legislature. I know many constituents become frustrated when important bipartisan legislation is stalled, but by continuing to work at it, the Legislature has finally approved smart policy that will save lives.
