Eagles wrestle two tournaments

Wrestling

     Two tournaments and a quadrangular meet kept the Midland wrestling team busy in recent action.

     The Eagles competed in the Zimmerman Invitational Dec. 8 at Maquoketa, and finished sixth in the eight-team event with 66 points. The North Scott junior varsity was tournament champion with 170 points.

     Midland had two champions. Damon Huston won by major decision in the finals to win the 120-pound title, and Brett Schoenherr scored three straight pins to become champion at 220.

     David Flores was fourth at 170 pounds. Placing fifth were Carson Hunter at 145 and Cayden Miller at 152.

     On Dec. 13, the Eagles hosted a quadrangular meet, winning one of their three matches. Midland defeated Edgewood-Colesburg 45-24, and lost to Lisbon 59-15 and to MFL MarMac 69-11.

     Damon Huston won all three of his matches, winning by decision, pin and technical fall. Others winning by pin during the meet were Griffin Gravel, Cayden Miller, Carson Hunter and Alex Smith. Brett Schoenherr had a decision victory against Lisbon.

     The Eagles then competed in the DeWitt Central tournament Dec. 15, taking sixth place of eight teams.

     Midland had three champions: Huston at 113 pounds, Gravel at 126 and Schoenherr at 220. Miller (138) and Hunter Shoaff (285) had third place finishes.

 

Boys basketball

     Midland played at Springville Dec. 7, and fell 57-27, with the Orioles outscoring Midland 22-7 in the third quarter to take a 21-point lead. Hunter Brown came off the Midland bench to score 15 points and grab nine rebounds. Britan Martens had nine points. Carsen Rupp and Brown had five steals apiece for the Eagles (1-6).

    

Girls basketball

     Three Midland players scored in double figures, but it wasn’t to overcome Tipton in a non-conference game Dec. 10 in Wyoming, as the Eagles lost 47-38. Drew Jensen and Morgan Soper scored 12 points apiece, and Ella Rupp added 11. Delanie Uppena had 16 rebounds. Jensen also had three assists and two steals for Midland (1-1, 1-6).
