Eagles win four to stay in TRC hunt

MIDLAND RECAP

Baseball

Midland completed a suspended doubleheader and then played three more baseball games last week, collecting four total wins. The Eagles finished the week in third place in the Tri-Rivers Conference, 1½ games behind conference-leading North Linn and one game behind Lisbon.

After a doubleheader at Bellevue Marquette was postponed June 19, the Eagles (13-3, 15-6) started their big week with a 9-6 non-conference, home win over Anamosa June 21. Midland’s six-run fifth inning erased 6-2 Anamosa lead. Alex Smith batted 2-for-3, and Austin Smith was 2-for 4 with a double. Fisher Bisinger pitched six innings to get the win, and Alex Smith worked the seventh inning for a save.

“After the second inning, Fisher was able to get in a groove and keep the game close for us,” Midland coach Ryan Steines said. “Finally we were able to get the bats going in the fifth inning. It was a good all-around inning, with everyone doing their job.”

On June 22, the Eagles played host to East Buchanan, and swept a doubleheader, winning 1-0 and 7-4. Connor Harms and Wilson Buckwalter combined on a five-hitter in the first game. Harms pitched 5 2/3 innings and struck out seven to pick up the win, and Buckwalter secured a save. Austin Smith had the Eagles’ only hit. Midland’s run was scored in the fifth inning, when Alex Smith’s squeeze bunt brought home Jensen Dodge.

In the second game, Midland spotted the Buccaneers a 4-0 lead before scoring seven unanswered runs. Dodge was 2-for-3 at the plate. Bisinger was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Austin Smith was 1-for-2 with a double. Buckwalter, pitching in relief of Dodge, picked up the win by pitching four innings of three-hit ball. Alex Smith worked the last two and got a save.

“This was a great team effort game,” Steines said. “Offensively we were very balanced again. We are a very tough offense when our players understand the job they need to do at the plate. This year we have been much better at moving runners up or hitting a sacrifice fly to get a run in.”

Earlier, Midland scored a 5-1 home victory over Springville June 21, completing a doubleheader that had been suspended June 15. Austin Smith was 2-for-2 with a double, and pitched a five-hitter over seven innings for the win.

In the second game, Ella Rupp, Ari Hacke, D.J. Uppena, Anna Roseland and Bahnsen had hits for Midland.
