Eagles split doubleheaders with EB, MV

MIDLAND RECAP

Baseball

Last week resulted in a pair of split doubleheaders for the Midland baseball team.

Midland (2-0, 4-2) played host to East Buchanan May 23, and split a doubleheader, winning 3-0 and losing 10-6. In the opener, Britan Martens pitched a four-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and one walk in seven innings. Martens also went 3-for-3 at the plate, and Alex Smith batted 2-for-3.

East Buchanan led the second game 5-1 after two innings, then scored five in the top of the fourth to lead 10-1 before the Eagles mounted a late rally. A Midland highlight came from Iziek Soper, who pitched three innings of scoreless relief.

“Our pitchers struggled to throw strikes, and we dug a hole early in this game,” Midland coach Josh Soper said.

On May 30, the Eagles played host to Maquoketa Valley, and split a doubleheader, winning 4-2 and losing 5-3. Smith and Martens combined on a four-hitter in the first game, with Smith pitching the first 5 1/3 innings for the win and Martens working a scoreless 1 2/3 to get a save. Martens batted 3-for-4 with a double, and Jensen Dodge was 2-for-4.

“This was a well-played game,” coach Soper said. “We pitched well and played good defense. Zain (Sauer, third baseman) made a great play taking a hit away, which saved two runs in the sixth. Brit (catcher) also threw out a couple of baserunners.”

Maquoketa Valley held Midland scoreless in the second game until the bottom of the seventh, when a three-run rally wasn’t enough. Wilson Buckwalter went 2-for-3 and Martens was 2-for-4, each with a double. Martens had two RBIs. Smith doubled. Starter Dodge pitched five innings and took the loss.

“We are proud of the guys competing until the very end,” coach Soper said.
