Did you know?

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor,

The Jones County taxing authority is out and about knocking on doors asking for permission to come into our most private place, our home. The reason – home inspection for tax purposes! They check everything from the water heater, furnace, A/C, garbage disposal, bedrooms, bathrooms, and everything in between to include the age of the shingles on the roof.

If we do not let the tax inspector into our homes (and we do not have to) he can stand outside to measure, inspect and note whatever evidence he presumes will affect our tax liability. Then he will guess what we have inside.

Our local government tells us (under threat of punishment) we have to clean up our property, if we can cut down a tree, that we have to be hooked up to a new sewer facility, even though we had just spent thousands of dollars putting in a new septic/sewer system, approved by Jones County regulators, and yes we will get taxed (billed) for using the government’s required system.

Now the tax inspector (paid for by our already levied taxes) comes to our homes for reasons to increase said taxes because we have taken care of our property, tore down the dilapidated buildings, painted the house, put in a retaining wall, and replaced a non-working furnace or water heater.

Then comes the April 3 supervisor’s meeting. All five of them, without so much as one nay, gave a loud, resounding yea to give $2,000 of taxpayer’s money to help fund the “Jones County Leadership Advisory Committee’s request for the fall 2018 program.” When I voiced my opinion against this request, I was told, and I quote “…this is a venue that is fairly modest in price …and at a very small price tag.” (Sounds like Nancy Pelose’s crumb comment on the $1,000 bonus many people received.) I wasn’t questioning the worth of the class, just the taxpayers’ money subsidizing it since all property owners are already heavily taxed for education.

Somehow we have given up almost every right bestowed upon us by our Founding Fathers in the Constitution. Maybe we need another Boston Tea Party. Better yet, let’s just clean the swamp.

My opinion – I’m just saying!
