Depth is evident in MHS wins

GIRLS GOLF

Monticello used the depth of its girls golf team to score a pair of victories as the Panthers opened their season.

The Panthers defeated Northeast in a dual meet at Plum River in Preston April 2, and then topped both North Linn and Springville in a triangular meet April 5 at Three Elms in Independence, a meet hosted by North Linn.

Monticello had the meet medalist in both meets, but they were different girls.

“I think our depth showed in the first two meets, as we had different medalists and runners-up,” Monticello coach Joe Steen said.

Dru Kramer was medalist at the first meet, against Northeast, shooting a 45 as the Panthers defeated the Rebels 193 to 215. Rebekah Prull was one shot back at 46. Marissa McNally had a 50, and Lydia Franzenburg shot a52.

“I think this was a good meet to start the season,” Steen said. “The kids had not been on a course until this meet. The consistency was good, and we need to continue that throughout the season.”

It did continue at Three Elms on Friday, where the top five Panther golfers were separated by just four strokes as Monticello shot 198. North Linn took second place with 254, and Springville did not have a complete team.

Lilly Lambert was medalist with a 48, but teammates Franzenburg and Prull were just one shot behind with 49s. Franzenburg won the cardback tie-breaker to be the runner-up. McNally and Kramer were three more shots back with 52s, and Karli Recker had a 63.

Steen called it “Throwback Friday,” as the Panther opponents were from the Tri-Rivers Conference, where Monticello once resided.

“I was happy with the way we played,” Steen said. “I think we just need to bring the scores down a little, but it’s a long season.”
