'Cats finish third at Cascade invite

     Maquoketa Valley opened its wrestling season by going 3-2 to take third place in a six-team round robin tournament, the Cascade Duals, Dec. 1.

     The Wildcats defeated Clayton Ridge 45-25, Bellevue 41-40, and Cascade 39-36. They lost to Washington 64-18, and to MFL MarMac 63-12.

     Michael Feldmann, wrestling at 220 and 285, went 4-1 with three pins and a forfeit victory. James LeGassick, at 170, also was 4-1, with a pin, a decision and two forfeits.

     Others getting wins included a pin and a major decision by Carter Kruse, pins by Michael Schaul and Parker Sternhagen, and decision wins from James DeMoss and Tim Harmon.

     “We had a lot of guys step up and rise to the occasion at a very good dual team tournament,” Maquoketa Valley coach Tim Andrews said. “I was very happy to see some of the young guys compete in their first high school wrestling competition and have success.”

 

Boys basketball

     Maquoketa Valley began its boys basketball season with a 64-31 loss to Clinton Prince of Peace Nov. 30 in Delhi.

     Leading scorers for the Wildcats were Andrew Holtz, AJ Ambundo and Andrew Hildebrand with six points apiece. Holtz had six rebounds and four assists.

     The Wildcats trailed 33-12 at halftime.
