The Barn Quilt Guy

“The Barn Quilt Guy,” aka. Danny Steiber, of Waverly gave a presentation at the Monticello library on Sept. 7 all about the history of barn quilts and their connection to the Underground Railroad through Iowa. Slavery was prohibited in Iowa ion the 1850s, meaning slaves who fled into the state could find safe homes to hide out in. The Underground Railroad in Iowa went as far north as Mechanicsville, as far east as Clinton, as far south as Farmington, and as far west as Percival. Steiber shared that there was numerous quilt patterns that farmers and ranchers used to display on their property so slaves knew where or not it was a safe place to seek refuge. Many of these patterns are used today in modern-day barn quilts. (Photo by Kim Brooks)
