Jones County Central

     The Jones County Central 4-H Club held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at the Lawrence Community Center.

     The meeting was called to order at 6:45 p.m. by president Elizabeth Creveling. Kirklen Kiburz led the Pledge of Allegiance. The Secretary’s Report was given and approved. Treasurer’s Report was not given. Roll call was: “What is your favorite ice cream flavor?” This was answered by 15 members.  Four leaders and eight guests were also present.

     Old business was: Edgewood Locker –everyone did a fantastic job. Swine Weigh in – Kirklen and Kaden Kiburz, Haven Baker, and Trista DeShaw all weighed in pigs. Intermediate Trip – Elizabeth Riniker reported on this.

     New Business was: Basketball Tournament will be on Saturday, April 8 at Monticello Middle School. Seniors will play in the morning with juniors playing afterward. FSQA/YQCA Training – You must attend one of the following sessions:  May 10 or June 15 at the Jones County Youth Development Center starting at 6:30 p.m. If you plan on exhibiting any of the following animals (Beef, Bucket/Bottle, Dairy, Goats (meat or dairy), Poultry, Rabbits, Sheep or Swine) you must take one of the sessions. Sheep/Goat/Market Hog Weigh-in: This is scheduled for Saturday, April 29 at the fairgrounds in Monticello from 9 to 11 a.m. Information will be sent to the members that are signed up for these projects. This weigh in is for non-state fair entries.

     May 15 is the deadline – no exceptions – for many forms (online and paper). Please get these in as no one wants to be left out from exhibiting at the fair, so make sure you check with a leader or check the Jones County website for more information.

     Communication and Clothing Event-This will be held on May 13 at the Jones County Youth Development Center.

     T-shirt design-This is tabled until the May meeting.

     Reminder to all members and parents to read the 4-H Online emails that come to your email (normally on a weekly basis). These are a great way to stay informed between monthly meetings. There are many events and opportunities for 4-H families to participate that are detailed in these emails, along with reminders for general county events, weigh-ins, etc.

     The following Presentations were given:  “Earnotching System for Pigs” – Kirklen Kiburz, “Decision Making for College Visits” – Elizabeth Creveling, “Speech Competition” – Autumn Kirby, “How to Care for Chickens” – Gracie Henderson and Natalia Williams, “Parts of a Saddle” – Hailey Henderson, “Care of a Yorkshire Terrier”– Natalie Henderson, and “How Much Sugar in Drinks” – Maisie Paulsen and Sierra Lief.

     The meeting was adjourned at 7:10 p.m. The 4-H Pledge was led by Autumn Kirby.

     The next meeting will be Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at the Jones County Youth Development Center in Monticello.

Jones County Central

     Jones County Central held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, May 7 at the Jones County Youth Development Center.

     The meeting was called to order at 6:46 p.m. by acting president Wesley Henderson. Grace Lubben led the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary’s Report was given and approved. Treasurer’s Report was given and approved. Roll call was – “What is one suggestion on how to prepare for the county fair when working on your 4-H projects?” It was answered by 19 members. There were three leaders and eleven guests present.

     Old Business: Elizabeth Riniker reported on the Sheep/Goat/Swine weigh-in. Haven Baker and Grace Lubben reported on 4-H basketball. The senior team made it to the finals and all had fun.

     New Business: The Communications/Clothing Event will be held May 13 at the Youth Development Center. If anyone has any extra time, please come support those that are involved in it. Working Exhibits will be presented on July 18 at the Sneak-A-Peek Night at the Fair. There will be FSQA training for anyone that will be exhibiting beef, bucket/bottle calves, dairy, goats, poultry, rabbits, sheep, or swine; the member must complete the Food Safety Quality Assurance Certification or they will not be eligible to show at the County Fair. The training will be held on May 10 or June 15 at the Jones County Youth Development Center, all starting at 6:30 p.m. The Extension office is asking this year that everyone that plans on attending a session please RSVP to the one that you plan on attending. A list of all of the forms that are due May 15 to the Extension Office were read off and it was noted that there are no exceptions for any of the forms or registrations. All registrations and applications are due to the Extension Office by May 15. The Iowa 4-H Youth Conference is being held from June 27-29 at the Iowa State University Campus. Registration is online and is due May 15. Pullorum Testing is for all chickens, waterfowl, and other species of poultry except for the Market Broilers that you might be thinking about taking to the fair. Broilers will be tested right before the fair. Testing will be done at the Jones County Fairgrounds – June 17 from 8 a.m. to noon. Region 10 Junior 4-H Camp is June 5-8 at Pictured Rocks for fourth- through sixth-graders. Camp is being held during the week this year. Registration is due to the Extension Office by May 15. Also discussed was involvement in the 4-Hers for 4-H, 4-H Insurance, and member fundraiser qualifications. A motion was given and approved for the new club t-shirt design.

     There were presentations given by:   Wesley Henderson on “Framing a Pitch as a Catcher,” Zabrina Kirby on “Different Kinds of Art,” and Grace Lubben on “Animal Science Trip.”

     The meeting was adjourned at 7:18 p.m.

     The 4-H Pledge was led by Haven Baker.

     The next meeting will be 1 p.m. on June 25 at the Jones County Youth Development Center and this will be our family potluck/club tour.

Prairie Hill

     The regular meeting of the Prairie Hill 4-H Club weas held at the Citizens State Bank Youth Development Center on May 15, 2017.

     The meeting was called to order by Chloe Gray at 6:18 p.m. The Pledge to the American Flag was led by Leah Koehler. Roll call was: “What project are you taking to the fair?” It was answered by 38 members. Six visitors were present.

     Minutes of the previous meeting were read. Motion to approve the minutes was made by Dawson Ricklefs, seconded by Claire Hogan. The Treasurer’s Report was not given. Outstanding bills included boxes and books. Motion to approve the outstanding bills was made by Bella Mullen, seconded by Lake Schnoor.

     Old business: FSQA was on May 10. April 29 was 4-H/FFA Market Swine and Breeding Gilt Identification. May 1 was the Market Broiler deadline, and the Clothing and Communication Event entry deadline.

     New business: The final FSQA date is June 15. Performance Livestock Evaluation is June 22. Animal livestock form is due prior to July 1.

     Giving presentations were Brooklyn Steiner, Gabrielle Steiner, Lorelei Rieken and Miranda Rieken.

     The next meeting will be June 19. Hosting the meeting will be “The Leaders.”

     Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Eian Weber, seconded by Lake Schnoor. The Pledge to the 4-H Flag was led by Connor Adams.
